Let’s face it, we’re in the middle of some pretty uncertain times. Most of us are quarantined and working from home or doing our schooling online, spending more time with our families than ever before. The good news is, we’ve found the silver lining. More time spent at home has increased the demand for high-quality, educational, streaming content that is both family-friendly and entertaining – and we have lots of it!
In response to the Covid-19 outbreak, we made some of our acclaimed IMAX films available for streaming. Popular titles like National Parks Adventure, Dream Big, America’s Musical Journey, Humpback Whales, The Living Sea, Dolphins and others are now available to watch at home. The response has been incredible.
Now, we’re taking viewers on a virtual adventure into giant-screen filmmaking with a behind-the-scenes-look at what it takes to get those larger-than-life IMAX shots. When Yellowstone National Park didn’t have enough snow for good winter shots, the MFF team looked further north to Michigan’s frozen Lake Superior to film renowned ice climber, Conrad Anker. Not enough snow transformed to more than enough! Check out how the team braved the -20°F weather and put the comfort of the camera before their own.
The filmmakers at MFF have the goal to make the audience feel like they are in the center of the action. To achieve this immersive experience, director Greg MacGillivray choreographs the movement of his subjects through their landscape and captures them with helicopters, drones, steady cameras and the humongous IMAX 3D Solido camera. To bring one of the Seven Wonders of the World to the 70-foot giant IMAX screen, the MFF film crew sure went the extra mile. Trudging up mountains to uncover ancient and long-untouched portions of the wall makes this wonder even more astounding. Discover the feat in this behind the scenes video.
