Grammy Award-nominated singer & songwriter Aloe Blacc stars in MacGillivray Freeman’s newest 3D giant screen documentary “America’s Musical Journey”
From New Orleans to New York City, a story of culture, creativity and the music that shaped America
September 15, 2017 – Laguna Beach, California – Jazz, blues, zydeco, rock ’n’ roll, old time country and other variations on America’s musical heritage are at the heart of MacGillivray Freeman’s newest 3D documentary, America’s Musical Journey, coming to IMAX® and giant screen theatres starting February 16, 2018. America’s Musical Journey celebrates the unique diversity of cultures and the creative risk-taking that characterize America, as told through the story of its music.
The film follows Grammy-Award® nominated singer and songwriter Aloe Blacc as he traces Louis Armstrong’s footsteps through the colorful locales and cultures where America’s music was born. Visiting cities such as New Orleans, Chicago, Detroit, New York City, Nashville, Memphis, Miami, Seattle and more, audiences will experience uniquely American adventures such as paddle-wheel boating up the Mississippi Delta, flash mob dancing in Chicago or skydiving with Elvis impersonators in visually powerful scenes shot specifically for the giant screen.

“America’s music, like its people, has migrated and evolved from different regions of the world, culminating in a unique blend of sound, culture and innovation unlike anywhere else in the world,” said the film’s Oscar-nominated director Greg MacGillivray. “We chose Aloe Blacc as our guide for this film as he embodies the creativity and trailblazing spirit that makes American music such a treasured experience around the world. I hope people are inspired to explore their own creativity after seeing the film.”
In addition to Aloe Blacc, audiences will meet other artists, music makers and innovators who are shaping America’s culture today, including bandleader Jon Batiste of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Latin music stars Gloria and Emilio Estefan, New Orleans legends Dr. John and Irma Thomas, Chicago jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis, Chicago footwork maestros Pause Eddie and “Lil’ Bit” Jackson, the Bandaloop vertical dancers, skydiving Elvis impersonators and many more.

America’s Musical Journey is being produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films in association with Brand USA, the nation’s destination marketing organization, and global presenting sponsor, Expedia, Inc. This is the second collaboration for these companies, following the highly successful National Parks Adventure, voted Best Film of the Year by the Giant Screen Cinema Association and the highest grossing documentary film of 2016.
