In 1996, MacGillivray Freeman Films filmed an amazing story that unfolded on the tallest mountain on Earth. In May of that year, Mt. Everest claimed the lives of 15 climbers in its deadliest season ever. The resulting film, Everest, became the highest grossing giant screen documentary film of all time. Based on the film’s overwhelming international success, MacGillivray Freeman Films returned to the mountain in 2007 to reveal more of its secrets for a new film Return to Everest.
In the spring of 2007, a medical research team led by Dr. Mike Grocott climbed to the summit of Mt. Everest, motivated by a dream that their scientific endeavors would contribute to life-saving medical treatments. Return to Everest documents the largest scientific expedition ever conducted at high altitude, including the high-altitude rescue of three injured climbers, the first-ever IMAX aerials of climbers summiting Mt. Everest, innovative medical testing on more than 200 trekkers to Everest Base Camp, and dramatic, never-before-attempted tests on the summit of Mt. Everest itself.
